About

Riley Young is a versatile drummer, educator, and collaborator based in the Baltimore–Washington area. Since 2020, Riley has worked extensively as a freelance drummer, performing in a wide range of genres across the Maryland-DC region. He has worked with artists including Charlie Ballantine, Bob Butta, Blake Meister, Clarence Ward III, Rufus Roundtree, and Noah Pierre. He is also a member of bassist Ed Hrybyk’s Trio, performing weekly at Baltimore’s Sunday jazz brunch series, and has toured the Eastern U.S. with the electronic pop group Adjective Animal. As a co-leader, he explores creative projects such as Impressions of Cocteau Twins, a jazz-inspired tribute to the UK band, and Captain Ahab, an original ensemble blending rock with maritime themes.

In addition to his performance career, Riley is an experienced educator passionate about nurturing the next generation of musicians. He teaches drums and piano privately and through institutions around Maryland, where he also leads after-school programs for Baltimore City Public Schools. His teaching emphasizes ear training, reading, improvisation, technical growth, and adaptability across styles.

A graduate of Towson University (B.M. 2022), he is currently pursuing further studies at the Peabody Conservatory under acclaimed drummer and composer Allison Miller. During his time at Towson, he studied under drummers Frank Russo, Mike Kuhl, and Eric Kennedy, developing a strong foundation in both jazz and contemporary styles. Whether on stage, in the studio, or in the classroom, Riley brings dedication, musicality, and an open-minded approach to every project.
